Week 7 - Subtitling

In this seminar we looked at how to set up subtitles on premiere pro for our projects. I won't go into the out and outs of how to achieve this, but I want to discuss how necessary this is for our project and not just our project but possibly in future work. In our project specifically we will definitely need to look at adding some subtitles in for the interview when the neoncouple speak, not just because it was over zoom, but because they wore masks to hide their identity and this skewed some of their speech so some parts are hard to hear. This is easily fixed through simple subtitles at the bottom of the screen for the sections we use of their answers.  On top of this, growing this skill allows for possible work in the future. It was discussed in the seminar that there is a lot of work out there for good subtitling work, especially nowadays with shows on streaming services. This gives incentive for me to actually focus on doing this and doing it well to possibly improve chan...

Why we have chosen to keep everything on screen?

I think this is an important question to answer as we have chosen a clear distinct style by keeping everything on screen and it needs to be explained. First of all, I think it works best for how we are showing and not telling the audience what is going on. We are physically showing the sites that are being used and how people promote and grow on Onlyfans.  On top of this from watching desktop documentaries I have noticed that the main thing to seamlessly go into the next clip etc is to close a tab and open up another one. We will do this, but to create more variety and to show greater creativity we will create these transitions in ways you wouldn't expect to see from a documentary. With the use of match on action or sound bridges, it can let us move across the online world with ease without the audience really noticing any significant change. The main thing we wanted was the ability to have many different ways to move from clip to clip, with this idea we have many more option...

Documentary Title:

This is a short post just to update on a possible title for our documentary that my group have discussed and put forward. I think this is the best title for our documentary that Josee suggested:  Onlyfans: The Online Sexhibit  I believe this is a great title and it really highlights the voyeuristic aspects of not just Onlyfans but also our desktop documentary. This is achieved through the joining of the words exhibit (things you look at) and sex (what Onlyfans shows); this title may change as time goes on, but I believe this is a great name put forward by Josee that should be the title.

Rough Sequence:

Below are screen grabs from a quick sequence I filmed myself to test out how we plan to keep everything on the documentary on the screen! To explain the sequence, we start on Instagram and click on and Instagram story, where we will see one of our characters 'promoting' their Onlyfans and this will then go into a self recorded video through match on action; as you can see as my hand drops from the story my arm drops in the self recorded video. This video then becomes smaller and we see it is a video made for the individuals 'Youtube' channel. This keeps everything in the online world and it does it in the most seamless way possible.

Surprising Issue in Transcript:

This is a quick post that I thought was interesting from the transcript. Every time the term 'Onlyfans' was said the transcription got this wrong every single time and when I wrote it out it became highlighted as not a real word. Of course Onlyfans isn't a real word, but, I feel this is more so just an indication of how new this platform is. This makes it somewhat more exciting that we are exploring this site and potentially introducing it to many more people that were yet to know it existed, similar to the transcripting tool!

'Don't F**k with Cats: Hunting an Internet Killer' (2019)

Image
As we are going with a desktop documentary, it reminded me of a recent Netflix docuseries that took over the world, 'Don't F**k with Cats'. In this docuseries we g on an investigation following an online cat killer. The reason this is beneficial to me at all is the fact it has a strong desktop documentary style implemented in it. When there is an interview recalling conversations online, or searching's on google maps, we see it on our screen as if we are seeing it happen in the moment. This is a fantastic use of the desktop style, not just in showing us information in a more engaging way. But it also shows the effectiveness in replicating what we as a society are so used to doing. This documentary was so entertaining and fun to digest as it felt we were the one on the investigation, searching ourselves as we were seeing things we are all so used to doing.  To summarise, from this docuseries I have taken some inspiration and I have gained more confidence in what we are...

Week 5 - Post Production Planning

This is another seminar on the post production process that I found helpful in knowing what is important in my role to focus on. We were told to know your footage inside and out to know off the top of your head where you would want footage to go, this is definitely a beneficial thing to be able to do as I have done this in previous projects and it helps to be efficient with the edit.  The importance of making multiple drafts was also discussed so you can constantly fine tune your film to make it the best it can be. This then allows you to narrow down your story to make it the best it can be, focusing on interesting the audience from the beginning to the end. As mentioned before, it is integral to create a rollercoaster that allows for the highs to feel even higher and the lows to feel lower. If a rollercoaster stayed in the same motion the whole duration it wouldn't be as enjoyable, this is the exact same when it comes to editing a documentary/film. Being aware of this will h...

Rough Transcript:

This is one of 8 pages that were transcribed from the interview, I am rather surprised it worked and now we are able to use this to help us decide the best parts to include in the doc. The main issue with this is there are chunks that are transcribed wrong and will need to be changed. But it has set up a template to work from to allow us to seamlessly choose parts without listening to the documentary all the way through again and again.

Week 4 - Editing Strategy

In this lesson we looked at different strategies we can take with our edit and how we can change our edit to create more meaning. The main thing I took from this seminar was the Four R's of Editing which are: Reveal, Ruthless, Reason and Rhythm. These all highlight necessary things you must do when it comes to the edit of your work. You must aim to show and not tell, which is something in our documentary we will really focus on as it is desktop documentary i.e we can physically show things through clicking links rather than tell. We must be comfortable in being ruthless and cutting any unnecessary scenes or clips from the documentary even if we have personal attachment to those scenes, as we cant include anything that slows down the pacing of the doc. The final thing we really need to take care with is the pacing of the whole film, we need there to be highs and lows to maintain excitement and engagement, but we don't want to be going ten miles an hour from start to finish, or ...
