How we will trancribe:

Image
After our seminar, we were shown how to transcribe our interview in the most efficient way possible, fortunately we were yet to start it! To transcribe our interview all we need to do is play it allowed and while doing this, press dictate on a word file and let it transcribe along. This isn't 100% accurate but allows for a template for one of us to proof read over and make correct!

Doing Interview:

Laurence and Josee have now completed the interview with the 'Neoncouple' who are our pps who already exist within the Onlyfans world. This will be the interview we will use to give Josee and Laurence information on what it is like starting an Onlyfans. This was recorded on zoom for around an hour. This will need to be transcribed and cut down quite a lot as to allow for the narrative to focus more on other elements rather than just this interview.

Questions we are going to ask:

We are focusing our questioning with The NeonCouple on more of the what made them want to get into the industry, how have they found it and what would they advise someone in the future doing it. This choice of questioning is the best in my opinion as it opens the door for there dialogue working well with the footage of Josee and Laurence. It could be as if they take their advice and go on with heir journey. At the same time everything they talk about will help further the understanding of Onlyfans for the audience at home who we presume are unaware of the field.

Sequence Plans:

We had a zoom meeting as a group and started constructing more of a narrative for our film and actually attempted to begin to visualise sequences within the film. We have now decided that we want every second of the film to be within the online world. Whether it be a Youtube video, a twitter feed or Instagram story, everything you see will take place in the world that Onlyfans resides.  One scene we have come up with, is how we will transition from one screen to the next, as it is desktop documentary. The sequence discussed would see the user of the desktop open up a instagram story, then this story would show one of the two using Onlyfans and as they move their phone down it would cut with a match on action, to them recording themselves for a Youtube video. This would then fall back onto the Youtube screen, where in the recommended Youtube video section there would be the next video the desktop would click on, this would be of the other person not shown in the first video. Pros and Cons of Desktop Documentary:

For me as the editor I have some personal things to get in order with this style of documentary as it has made it a much different task to what we had already planned. This style of documentary is very new to me so will take some trial and error to see how to successfully maneuver the desktop to further the narrative.  The pros of this style are so clear to see. It is visually engaging, fits within the world of Onlyfans and allows for diverse storytelling. On top of this it fits all the modes of documentary we wanted to create and does so in a very seamless manner. The audience don't necessarily see the camera at work, but may see the premiere pro timeline as a new scene begins. It opens the door for me to really express myself through the edit, so I need to make sure I do it successfully. The main con of this style is it does require a bit more of a unique touch to a more standard form of documentary. This style requires me to plan out much ahead what I will record through m...

Choosing Desktop Documentary:

After being exposed to this style of documentary, we have somewhat found the last piece of the jigsaw puzzle for our documentary. Due to COVID we were already aware of the lack of filming we would be able to do with us all in different places across the country. So there was a fear of filling the documentary. After finding a pps to interview it eased some of these concerns, but we were still stumped as to how intertwine the lot together. After seeing this style of documentary we have found out how. As I am the editor, this is how I feel we can best depict this documentary of ours. It's not just a contemporary way to present it, just as Onlyfans is contemporary, it is being presented in the world Onlyfans lives. We will be in the desktop, so when exploring the web and looking at all these different sites to understand Onlyfans more we will be doing exactly that in the documentary. It not only allows us to show and not tell, but allows us to create an engaging narrative that can be ...

A Punk Prayer - Pussy Riot (2013)

Image
This film looked into the Russian feminist activist group - Pussy Riot, and their court case scandal that spread their movement across the globe. It followed three key members of the group from where they started to where they ended up. I really enjoyed this documentary and the way it chose to convey the story of all of these individuals. The main thing to take from this documentary is the way it was constructed and edited to make it as engaging as it is. The documentary starts at the inciting event and shows this to us, but then goes back and builds a backstory to this. But throughout the doc we see different times explored, for example when we get a personal recall from a family member to describe what their daughter, for example, was like when she was younger. This personal exploration of the three characters occurs when they are on trial and being inspected by so many. It was a very interesting decision to not present this documentary in a traditional narrative of beginning, m...

Finding Participants!

For the past few days one of the members of our group - Josee, has managed to get a response and an agreement to do an interview with an Onlyfans worker! There are in fact two people as they do Onlyfans as a couple, which is even more interesting and an element we can explore in the questioning when we get round to the interview.  We have still decided to keep with the idea of Josee and Laurence starting up an onlyfans, but now with this interview there will be a section of the documentary where both of them discuss what it is like to work in this field, to get some inside information before starting up their venture on the site. This creates an amazing dynamic where we have not only a fresh perspective of the site form the two members of the group, but we also get the already experienced perspective that can allow them to change their approach to this venture.  Overall, after many messages unanswered, we are really happy to have gotten a response and we are very gratefu...

Kevin B. Lee - Transformers Desktop Documentary:

Image
In this seminar we were shown Kevin B. Lee's desktop documentary surrounding the 'Transformers' film and the wider issues surrounding it. Although, the topic itself wasn't the most intriguing for me, the style of the documentary was. This was a documentary that took a very contemporary approach that stood out from any other. The choice was made for it to be a desktop documentary, a doc where everything taking place is on a computer screen. So, if you're watching an interview, we see how this is accessed through a Youtube link, or if we find a new definition of a word we see this highlighted through an online site.  Seeing this film really opened our eyes to how a traditional documentary can be challenged and presented in a different manner. Although all the footage and information we were shown already exists on the web as it is, it still felt fresh and unique. It somewhat compiled evidence and footage that already exists to form the argument the documentary was tr...

Update on Idea:

After discussing with the group about our documentary idea, we have come up with an alternative idea that can be done without a participant in it, which we have struggled to find. This idea would involve two people in our group starting their own Onlyfans account and giving a first person account of what their experience is like using it. Through this we can get an insight into how hard it is to grow, the issues it causes with family and friends and also the journey of what they decide to post and feel comfortable with revealing.  This of course could be an issue for the Laurence and Josee who will be doing it, however we are all on the same page that they will only post what they feel comfortable posting. For example, Laurence will post fitness content and Josee feels comfortable posting selfies/instagram posts. This first person experience allows us to look at what it's like starting up an account and gives an inside look to how easy it is to grow etc.  At the moment t...

Week 2 - Visual Storytelling

In todays seminar we looked through all of the trailers we created for our first term submissions and all gave our input on them regarding on how well they were created and how visually engaging they were.  The main thing that came up in this discussion was that the majority of us didn't indulge in the idea of showing and not telling enough. For example, in our trailer we had a variety of different YouTube clips used of people discussing the positive and negatives of Onlyfans. There was one section that was a bit longer where a woman explained what onlyfans was, the issue with this is we should have had a focus on showing it during this part, instead of just having it down as a discussion. This is due to the fact we could have lost the viewers in this part, they could have been distracted or lose focus, especially in a short 3 minute trailer where they have to be as engaged as possible. This is something we will take into our actual documentary as we will have a similar set u...

La Jetée - (1962)

Image
As much as I didn't enjoy this film, it shows a clear example of how you can show and create a narrative in a very different way to what we deem as normal. It worked extremely well in showing and not telling what exactly was going on, for a viewer this allows for more active viewing and being more engaged in what they are watching. With this there was a better focus on other elements of filmmaking; for example, sound was integral in the film to fill the void of the missing dialogue, showing how important sound can be for developing a narrative. When we saw certain things accompanied by a different sound it creates a different feeling and emotion to what we are seeing. Of course for us in documentary we wouldn't necessarily have a similar style to a film like this, but it most certainly highlights the importance of sound that can be used. There was also a use of the Kruyoshev effect, as a singular shot was cut to different opposing images to create a different meaning. The man l...

Start of Final Term:

We begin this final term in a similar situation to the last term as we are still in lockdown and somewhat up in the air as to who we will be able to get involved and how we can involve them. At the moment we are still contacting people that work within onlyfans as we hope to get a participant for our documentary. While still in lockdown we are almost certain we will go with the vice style and film it online, but we of course have to play it by ear.
